This study analyzes the development of the Lithuanian national identity. It is looked at from the viewpoint of cultural forms and societys psychology. The most important questions raised are: what doorsteps of becoming conscious were crossed in creating a project of Lithuanian society in the future, when did the image of the modern nation appear in cultural self-consciosness, how did the value of the idea Lithuania and homeland grow. The questions are discussed mostly looking at the culture of the 19th c.; particular attention is paid to marginal writers.
