The village of Varpas has not disappeared from the map of Brazil today, even though its population is small, most (including Latvian descendants) speak Portuguese. However, the phenomenon of Varp (more broadly, the Brazilian Latvian) is quite attractive and significant for Latvia and Latvians today. It allows us to look at the exodus of Latvians over the centuries, the struggle for survival in the new home countries, the material prosperity gained over time, and the small islands where Latvianness is preserved in spite of everything.
