The sociolinguistic study is about intercultural communication in Latvia over the past twenty years – since Latvia’s accession to the European Union in 2004 until today. The study reveals that discrimination against the Latvian language is still observed in many places and that public bilingualism in Latvian and Russian exists. The monograph will help linguists, politicians, diplomats, journalists, educators, and the wider public to understand and explain the linguistic situation in Latvia. The documentary material obtained in the study can also be used in Latvian general education schools to teach Latvian linguistic boundaries and other language issues. The documentary material will help Latvian foreign policy makers to argue their positions in international forums that deal with human rights and other issues, in order to refute myths about linguistic discrimination against non-Latvians in Latvia.
