The book by Aivars Stranga, a qualified doctor of history and a full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, is dedicated to the fateful period in Latvian history, from the criminal Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact to the occupation of Latvia. It examines the short-lived neutrality of Latvia, the pact of mutual assistance imposed on the country with the USSR, relations between Latvia and the USSR, as well as relations with Lithuania and Estonia. The book also describes the internal political situation of the country, including the activity of the Latvian Communist Party. Much attention is devoted to the eve of the occupation and the characteristics of the course of the occupation. In the end, the events in Latvia in the first days after the occupation (June 18-21, 1940) are considered.
