Kalitnikovskoe is a Moscow cemetery founded in the eighteenth century on the outskirts of the city. By now it lies close to central Moscow. Four generations of the author's ancestors are buried there. He goes there to hear stories of their lives and of each other. The genre of the book is hard to define: it is not fiction, nor a memoir; not a documentary, nor a collection of historical sketches – although the reader may disagree. What is the book about? It is about a sense of guilt. We are all guilty to each other in some way. Yet not everyone has the courage, desire or time to admit it, to think it over seriously, let alone to write it down. This happened to be an important matter for the author.
