Jozef Jankovic (1937-2017) is undoubtedly the most important Slovak sculptor of the 20th century. The book not only commemorates his exceptional work and personality, but also maps in depth the part of the artist's work that he dedicated to the theme of the head. "The Crown of the Body" has become for him a peculiar scene of small life banalities, human and social dramas, comedies and tragicomedies, which do not lose their relevance. Jankovic's heads mostly do not have faces, they are rather busts, mask-profiles, which were denied the miracle of vision, but unexpected and surprising events take place in their shapes and silhouettes. The artist uses them in a special way to comment on our personal and historical complexes, victories and failures, individual and collective experience. At the same time, they are a kind of record of his innovative thinking, the variability of forms, techniques and handwriting over time. In the graphically impressive book, the reader will find several previously unpublished and lesser-known works of the sculptor.
