The collective monograph analyzes the mechanisms of interaction of state authorities of Austria-Hungary, West Ukrainian People's Republic, Second Commonwealth, Ukrainian SSR, independent Ukraine, and civil society institutions in the Western Ukrainian lands in the context of the XX-th century. The peculiarities of creation and activity of public organizations, political parties are described, the role of the Church in state-making processes and public life is traced, the specificity of the dialogue between the authorities and civil society in the period of military disasters, as well as in the conditions of a totalitarian society. It describes the exercise by civil society institutions of control over the activities of public authorities in historical retrospect, and proves that the interaction of state institutions with civil society institutions is an important prerequisite for the establishment of a legal, democratic state.
