This book is a large-scale photo album about the exile of the Estonian people organized by the Soviet occupation authorities in 1940-1953. including arrests of the political elite and military personnel, mass deportations, Russian prisoner of war camps, forced resettlement to Siberia and subsequent consequences. On 14 June 1941 Soviet repressive organs deported about 10 000 Estonian citizens to Russia, mainly people who had carried the nation and independence, servants of the Republic of Estonia. A large number of these, mostly the heads of families, never again saw their home country or their dear. During the Soviet occupation from 1940 to 1991 some 90 000 citizens of the Republic of Estonia perished, a roughly similar number left their home country permanently. The human loss during the Second World War and the repressions following this is estimated to 17.5% of the total number of Estonians, to which should be added practically complete annihilation of the national minorities living in Estonia (except Russians).
