The paper analyzes the processes of origin, formation and development of political self-determination in the Ukrainian legal system through the prism of the state-building struggle of the Ukrainian people and their further development and legitimation of their own statehood, as well as the study and systematization of subjects and legislation. The essence of political self-determination as a principle of law, legal institution and effective mechanism of protection of collective rights of ethnic groups, considered in the historical context of development of the Ukrainian statehood, and also political and legal bases of origin, the order of normative fixing and realization, specificity of subject structure of this right self-determination.
