The study covers the history of one of the leading medieval trades of the Ural Finno-Ugric peoples - smithcraft. The research is aimed at determination of the role of smithcraft and smiths in the life of the medieval Permyak society, as well as the nature of contacts between the Ural peoples in manufacturing sphere, not forgetting manifestations of innovations in the local smithcraft. The problem solving rests on the results of over 600 metallographic studies.
