The monograph considers historical Hausa songs – monuments of West African literature. Special emphasis is placed on history of Hausa and poetry countries of the XVIII-XIXth centuries. It is for the first time in Africa studies that various editions of the “Songs of the Battle of Tabkin Koto” are described as a system. It is an attempt of a comparative analysis of the XIXth century poetry devoted to jihad in the Hausa countries. Special chapters are devoted to songs of abuse sung in the Hausa language which can be viewed as sources for Sokoto wars in the XIXth century.
