An outstanding German scientist Hurbschmann (1848 - 1898) was the first to prove that the Armenian language though belonging to Indo-European languages is an independent branch. Hurbschmann is the author of more than 20 treatises in Armenian studies and he aimed to create a 3 volume set about the Armenian language but had time to finish only the first volume - Etymology of the Armenian Language, which covers around 2000 words - 1971 common nouns and 217 proper nouns.
