The discovery of gold-bearing sites in the Amur River Region in the XIXth century caused a rapid development of industry, agriculture and trade. Gold-miners were from different classes. D.Benardaki, for instance, was a noble, millionaire and art patron. N.Anosov was a famous explorer of Siberia, geologist, founder of some gold-mining companies. The spouses Shanyavskys invested their means in foundation of the Girls’ Medical Institute in Saint-Petersburg and the first Russian People’s University in Moscow. Merchant V.Sabashnikov and his sons, book publishers M. and S.Sabashnikov, were their partners.
