General Wladyslaw Anders took a permanent place in the national pantheon among the most outstanding Polish leaders of the 20th century. He gained fame during the Italian campaign, which lasted several months. The road to glory led through the Polish I Corps in Russia, the Greater Poland Uprising, the war with the Bolsheviks, and the September battles of 1939. After 1945, he had to fight in exile for another quarter of a century. Until the end of his life, he remained a guardian of the memory of the victims of the Katyn massacre. The general became one of the symbols of the struggle and unwavering adherence - despite political realities - to the idea of Polish sovereignty.
