Reprint of the 1922 edition. The author V.P. Girchenko (1878-1953) was a well-known local historian, bibliographer, teacher, public figure and propagandist. He stood at the origins of the historical science of Buryatia. The scientific and creative heritage of Girchenko is still relevant today. In this work, he first examined the history of the Old Believers communities of the late 18th-early 19th centuries, with the use of archival material characterizing the resettlement of the Old Believers in Transbaikalia, their economic activities, and the fight against persecution by the local administration. The publication is provided with comments about the mentioned historical persons, settlements, socio-economic and legal problems.
