Evi Upeniece (1925–2024) recalls her childhood years, which took place in the interwar period of Latvia, her youth, which coincided with World War II, and her studies at the Latvian Academy of Arts, which she completed during the Soviet occupation. Despite the restrictions, Upeniece managed to travel not only to the USSR, but also to Western Europe, and these impressions have been significant in her work. In her almost century-long life, Evi has experienced an incredible number of both good and sad moments. Upeniece's husband, sculptor Voldemars Rapikis, died in a car accident, and her son Karlis also passed away prematurely. These experiences undermined the artist's health, and then in 2014 a fire completely destroyed her house. However, despite everything, Evi did not give up, continued to work and regularly organize exhibitions. The book was written over several years. Its compiler, Marika Rozenberga, has been recording the artist's memories since 2020, when the exhibition "Daughter of the Earth" was organized in the "Aminori" space in honor of the sculptor's 95th birthday.
