Art historian Janis Kalnacis's research on Latvian graphic artist and art educator Janis Sternbergs (1900–1981) reveals the biography and professional activities of a hitherto little-known personality in many ways. Having received academic education and cultivated his exceptional graphic artist talent in the first half of his life, Sternbergs went into exile during World War II and, towards the end of his life, in the United States, through relentless creative experiments, he came to his sand patterns created using the screen printing technique.
