The book represents a collection of articles written mostly on the basis of the reports dedicated to the anniversary of the remarkable Russian architect of the second half of XIXth - the first quarter of XXth century (2009 marked the 150th anniversary of his birth). Despite their relative independence, the articles give the impression about the career of the architect, the problematics of his work. Therefore, the first chapters describe the little-known facts of the early works of the architect – the works of Schehtel as a theatre artist, an author of the scenery, costumes. The first chapters also cover the first major success of the young Shechtel – an allegorical demonstration, timed to coincide with the coronation of Alexander III, the temples projects designed and built by the architect, the semantics and structure of the mansions and estates. An attempt is made to clarify the historical place of the modernist style , and to assess the contribution of the architect in the architecture of the first Soviet decade.
