The collection of articles marks the results of the scientific conference, held at the State Hermitage on March 1-2, 2005, which was a part of the program, which also included a temporary exhibition “Muses and Masks. Theater and Music in Antiquity. Antiquity on Theater Stages of Petersburg”. The Hermitage is the only museum in Russia, which includes a still functioning theater building of Catherine’s epoch. The majority of the reports are dedicated to original interpretation of the theatrical principles in fine arts from the Middle Ages to the present days. The articles of the collection reflect different sides of interaction between fine arts and theater.
