The book is dedicated to the first expedition of the medical anthropologist Noel Zhumabaevich Shayakhmetov, which describes the search and excavation of the grave of the Kazakh poet-rebel of the 19th century Makhambet Utemisov, the last hours of his life, the circumstances of his death, the anatomical and anthropological characteristics of the skeleton, the history and stages of the reconstruction of the hero's appearance. The author conducted research in the archives of Alma-Ata, Orenburg, Tashkent and Moscow, interviewed local residents and aksakals. The book was first published in 1969 under the title "From the Darkness of Centuries" and has become rare today. This edition publishes for the first time the "Transcript of the meeting to discuss the work of N. Shayakhmetov (bust of Makhambet Utemisov) at the Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR on June 3, 1967" chaired by Academician A.Kh. Margulan, documents on the topic and forgotten interviews. The book ends with an essay on the life and work of N.Zh. Shayakhmetov and the first steps of Kazakh anthropology, written by his nephew R.R. Shayakhmetov, who recorded his memoirs in 2004-2008, as well as the memoirs of anthropologist G.V. Lebedinskaya, academician S.B. Balmukhanov, and others.
