After 1783, numerous travelers began to come to the Crimea on duty or simply out of curiosity. In an era of the dawn of modern science and the limited capacity of the press, travelers' notes created images of distant lands in the collective imagination of the West. This book is the first comprehensive study in historiography of the image of Crimea, formed by the British, who visited the peninsula after its annexation to Russia.
