Hans Schmidt, born in Basel in 1893, was an architect, urban planner, and architectural theorist who was a pioneer of the New Building movement in Switzerland and a co-founder of the CIAM (Contemporary Architecture and Design Institute) before moving to the USSR in 1930 as a specialist for seven years. There, he continued his work on micro-apartments and serial planning. In 1956, Schmidt began a further career in the GDR at the German Building Academy. His responsibilities included the standardization of housing construction and the development of standard buildings. The Swiss communist returned to his homeland in 1969 and died there in 1972.
