During the Second World War the territory of the current Donetsk and Luhansk regions became the scene of fierce battles between the Soviet Army and the Wehrmacht and allied armies. After this the territory was ineptly lost in the fall of 1941, throughout 1942 and half of 1943, the Soviet army tried to change the situation at the cost of huge losses. But only in August 1943 did it succeed. Historian Mykhailo Zhyrokhov tells about the course of hostilities and how Donbas lived under occupation.
