This extensive publication by the NFA team of authors is the first comprehensive scholarly monograph devoted to the films (and their digitization) of Czech director and cinematographer, pioneer of Czech cinema Jan Krizenecky. The book offers an insight into the history of early Czech film and the material form of early cinematographic works. It draws on many years of archival research of film materials at the National Film Archive and previous experience with their presentation, as well as a wide range of methodological approaches, in particular archival theory and digital restoration, the history of film technology, materialist film and media theory, media archaeology, film aesthetics, and artistic research. The publication consists of two equal parts, the first consisting of original studies that unpack the materiality and circulation of films of Krizenecky from different positions; the emergence of the theoretical passages was also informed by the process of digitization. The second part presents a comprehensive, detailed and annotated edition of documents that contextually and factually anchor the life of the first Czech films and their creator (a map of the places where Jan Krizenecky shot; a timeline of his life and work; the surviving material objects of Krizenecky, etc.). The monograph contains a rich pictorial appendix, filmography, bibliography and indexes.
