Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich since 1891 held the post of Moscow Governor-General - the most important position in the system of regional power of the Russian Empire. The appointment of his brother by Emperor Alexander III to Moscow emphasized the special status of the ancient capital. The diaries of the Grand Duke are a particularly valuable source in view of the high position of the author, both as a member of the Romanov dynasty and as a major statesman. Although the diaries of Sergei Alexandrovich have already been introduced into scientific circulation, but, with the exception of the diary for 1905, they were published only in excerpts. In view of the significance of the source, a full scientific publication of the document seems necessary. This project involves deciphering the text, writing an introductory article and compiling comments on the diaries for 1894.
