The first volume observes formation of the system of university education in Russia. In the center of attention there is the first university Statute approved by Aleksandr I on November 5, 1804, that provided a basis for universities' autonomy and made them leading educational institutions of the Russian Empire. The second volume studies the process of realization of University reform of 1804 that had to be carried out in difficult social and political conditions. Special attention is paid to activities of professors, teachers and students of Moscow University after the Patriotic war of 1812. The book also reflects the period of development of the Universities of Kharkov, Kazan and St.Petersburg, marvelous examples of cradles of culture.
