The book examines the relationship between civilization and culture, the functions of civilization. The relevance of the topic is due to the peculiarities of the modern socio-civilizational stage of development, the reconstruction of moral values and ideological attitudes. The methodological distinction between the concepts of "civilization" and "culture" can help in sociocultural research. Historical and comparative methods were used. The points of view of famous philosophers are given, five main differences between the concepts of "civilization" and "culture" are highlighted. Culture and civilization are not opposed to each other, but are different in nature. Culture is a creation, it is mostly individual; civilization represents the transition from creation (culture) to the acquisition and preservation of the products of cultural creation for all. There is no civilization without culture. The functions of civilization are determined: adaptive, regulatory, unifying, repressive. It is shown that the impact of civilization on a person is external, in civilization a person is an object, an individual, one of many. In culture, on the other hand, a person is both an object formed under its influence and a subject who creates thanks to the inner potential and in spite of the existing civilizational norms. It is the clash of external influence on a person, expressed in various standards, and internal potential that contribute to his development. Civilization is a necessary condition for the development of culture and human development .
