"Gray" - this term used by contemporaries and historiography as a kind of permanent or rather qualifying adjective stuck to Count Gyula Szapary, the professional politician and statesman. Although he was there for many important government decisions, the preparation of laws and their passage through the parliament as minister and then as prime minister, they were not connected to his person or name. Szapary was led by both a sense of duty and ambition in association life and in local or national politics. He was a successful farmer and participated in the major infrastructural developments of his time. In the economic field, he understood the requirements of the new times, but he did not want to change his old-style political behavior: he did not seek popularity. Gyula Szapary, as the ninth Prime Minister of Hungary and head of three different ministries, was a permanent and important player in the political life of the Compromise period. Despite this, apart from a few studies, historical studies have not dealt with his career in more detail so far. Our present biographical volume tries to fill this gap.
