The paper deals with a new trend in linguistics that appeared together with modern information technologies and enabled linguistics to accumulate huge amounts of texts in order to compile electronic corpora. Corpora are analyzed with the help of the frequency lists, concordancies, collocational profiles, etc., which are used for linguistic applications. Nowadays the status of corpus linguistics is shifted from merely a methodology towards a distinct approach to language description. The final section of the paper is devoted to the present and future roles of corpus linguistics in the information society.
