In 1856, the famous archaeologist and historian Aleksey Sergeevich Uvarov turned to the members of the Academy of Sciences with an unusual proposal: he wanted to honor the memory of his recently deceased father, the former Minister of Public Education S.S. Uvarov, establishing a special prize, which was to be awarded annually on behalf of the Academy for the best play and for the best research in history. Uvarov promised to allocate considerable funds, which were due to the winners. Academicians gratefully accepted the proposal of the patron and established the first literary prize in Russia. In Kirill Zubkov's book, the Uvarov Prize becomes a kind of key that opens access to numerous problems of literary and social history. Its study allows the author to raise questions about the relationship between literature and theater, drama and society, professional and amateur literature, about the influence of developing social institutions of the era of "Great Reforms" on the drama of that time, about the links between textbook dramatic works with the development of nationalism and historical thinking.
