The study of the remains of the Birzulis Islands cemeteries, individual Stone Age graves near Virvyte and Resketa, is of particular importance for the appearance of the ancient inhabitants, their burial customs, beliefs and even language knowledge. It was modestly started in 1930–1934, when the first Stone Age anthropological material was discovered while manually straightening the beds of the Virvyte and Resketa rivers. The research was successfully continued with the discovery of as many as 2 Stone Age cemeteries: in 1981–1982 – Donkalnis and in 1985–1986 – Spiginas. The research of these cemeteries, unique even on a European scale, has not stopped to this day, more and more new and abundant material is accumulating, and new forces are joining the ranks of researchers not only from Lithuania, but also from Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Belgium, Great Britain, the United States of America, Canada and other countries of the world. The book is the results of the latest research conducted in the region in question – archaeological, anthropological, linguistic and in a broad sense natural science, especially paleogenetic. These studies are exceptionally important for understanding the cultural and ethnic history of our ancestors. It is here, in the old Birzulis region, that the research of the burial grounds of the ancient Europeans, Indo-Europeans and ancient Baltic tribes who lived and their surrounding settlements already helps and will help in the future to solve many questions that are significant not only for understanding the origin, cultural, ethnic and biological-genetic history of the Stone Age people of Lithuania and the Baltic region, but also of the whole of Europe.
