The Khanty are one of the largest of the small nations, as the Soviet calls the tribal peoples of Siberia, whose numbers total only a little over 200,000. This paper reviews the history of the Yuganskii Khanty, the last large Eastern Khanty group whose traditional culture and economy remain intact, and argues for the need to create a special protected land use regime, conforming to the international standards for a Biosphere Reserve, in order to preserve this unique culture formation and the middle West Siberian taiga on which it depends, from the treat of petroleum development.
