On the example of Vitebsk, Grodno and Mogilev, the problems and achievements of urban planning in Belarus from the turn of the XIXth-XXth centuries are considered. The intensive socialist transformations of Belarusian cities were analyzed during the radical modernization of urban structures in the 1930s and 1960s and in the process of searching for the architectural appearance of urban centers in the 1970s and 1980s. The artistic features of the urban development of independent Belarus are revealed, preserving their social orientation and creatively taking into account the achievements of past periods.
