The book considers the emergence of open markets, often described as «ethnic» ones, and their influence on the development of a Post-Soviet city. Post-Soviet markets are regarded by the authors as one of the most important mechanisms for the transformation of the Post-Soviet city. Using the case of Irkutsk, the authors study the problem of the continuity between the Pre-Soviet and Soviet bazaars and the Post-Soviet markets, and present the history of the emergence and development of «Chinese» markets. On the basis of field research, the development of a system of open markets as an essential element of urban infrastructure as well as their impact on changing urban space and mobilities is analyzed. With the help of a scope of interviews and media materials, the formation and change of mythology regarding open markets, including «ethnic» ones, interaction of various social groups in their space, and the dynamics of communication strategies in the market space are considered.
