The novel takes us back to the second half of the 19th century, the closing decades of the National Revival Period in Bulgaria. The process of change in Bulgarian society is presented through the fate of Bacho Kiro, a real-life educator and active participant in the movement for liberation from Ottoman Turkish rule. The novel was first published in two parts in 1936 and 1937. It was very successful. Unfortunately, the author Zmei Goryanin suffered severely at the hands of the communist regime after 1944. He was sentenced by the so-called People's Court and his books were banned. After many years of oblivion, his "Bacho Kiro" is back in the hands of readers to revive the memory of a renowned Bulgarian.
