A people with a thousand-year history like the Bulgarians, with so many ethnic branches all over two continents, a people that regardless of the circumstances honors and preserves its name and traditions, is practically indestructible. Five hundred years of Ottoman rule did not erase the Bulgarian national name from the people's memory. Five hundred years of Russian domination could not erase the Bulgarian self-consciousness of thousands of Volga Bulgarians. After two whole millennia of Roman, French and German dependence, the Belgians managed to regain their name and sovereignty. It is the turn of the Bulgarians.... That is why, filled with confidence in the future, but also with undisguised pride in the past, I am reminded of Paisius of Hilendara - the man whose fiery written word marked the beginning of the Bulgarian Renaissance. I recall his unforgettable address: "Oh, you foolish and fools!..." And I think that if he had written his "History" today, he would have continued: "Be sure - a day is coming when you yourself will be ashamed of your shame for calling yourself a Bulgarian.
