Dmitry Khmelnitsky is a well-known historian of architecture, architect by education, who has been living in Germany for the last twenty years. His book “Architect Stalin” is devoted to Soviet architecture of the 1930-1950ss. Basing on documents, many of which are introduced for the first time, the author considers the way of its “stalinization”. By Khmelnitsky’s version that process was not so much ideological as stylistic, determined by strategic considerations of the supreme customer. In contrast to the opinion of the style evolution in Soviet architecture Khmelnitsky insists on an individual character of its history.
