This book was inspired by the 150th anniversary of Antanas Smetona in 2024 and the exhibition “Antanas Smetona: Difficult Choices” curated by the author. This is another attempt to present to the Lithuanian public the decisions of a politician who shaped the history of the first half of the 20th century, which were often determined not only by his legal education and moral norms, but also by the circumstances of the time. The author invites the reader to take a closer look at the twists, turns, and ups of this historical figure’s life, his constant search for compromises in solving political dilemmas and the most difficult decision in life. This story, based on historical documents, biographical research, and testimonies of descendants of Antanas Smetona’s family, will help answer these and many other questions and dispel false myths and stereotypes about the longest-serving President of Lithuania, whose name is used to name an entire era. The book is richly illustrated with various moments of his life.
Ingrida Jakubaviciene is a historian, Doctor of Humanities, museum curator at the Historical Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Lithuania in Kaunas, and author of books.
