A collection of papers from a 2016 international scientific conference dedicated to Dimitar Dobrovich, the first academically trained Bulgarian painter. Dobrovich began his education in his hometown Sliven and then went to study in Constantinople. Later, he finished the Fine Arts School in Athens. He lived and worked in Rome for 40 years until 1893, when he returned to Sliven. Dobrovich is a rare example of an early artist who systematically pursued a career in painting. The papers in this book provide new insights into his life and artistic experiments and discuss more general questions about the course of history, culture, and the ethics and esthetics of the period in which Dobrovich lived.
