One of the industrial suburbs of Kutaisi was named Zaodi during the Soviet era, and this name has survived in urban orality, as a pseudo-topos lost on the map of the Soviet industry, both terrifying and saddening at the same time, inevitable and a solution. Elsa Gurgenidze turned this pseudo-topos into the main metaphor of the novel. Zaod is a place where tragicomic events unfold with epic intensity. The novel tells us about the consciousness of people damaged by the totalitarian regime and the tragic fate of individuals irreconcilable with the system.
