In her research, based on documents, memoirs and epistolary sources, Anna Protsyk examines the intellectual currents that captivated Eastern European youth in the period after the Polish uprising of 1830. In the center of her attention there are the ideas that the Polish insurgents brought to the environment of the young Czech, Slovak and Ukrainian intelligentsia in the Austrian and Russian empires. These ideas were based on the democratic principles and humanistic ideals of Giuseppe Mazzini, the leader of the struggle for the unification of Italy and the founder of "Young Europe" - an anti-imperialist union of oppressed peoples ready to support each other in their national liberation struggles.
