The work covers basic migration waves of Circassions to the countries of Near East and North Africa in the XIX-XXth cc. The role of Circassion immigrants and their descendants in social and political history of Ottoman Empire, Egypt, Sudan and Tunis in the XIXth century and Syria and Jordan in XIX-XX cc. is comprehensively studied in the book. The author pays special attention to the problems Circassion newcomers experienced settling down in strange countries, their relations with native population often culminating in furious conflicts, transformation of their social structure and way of life, factors ensuring preservation of Circassion ethnic identity. The publication is based to a great extent on archival materials and contains a lot of statistical data.
