Germany during the First World War. Electric appliance factory worker Alfred Klein mobilized to the front. He goes through the war from beginning to end, not understanding its meaning and purpose, and then joins the revolutionary events. The story was written in 1927 in an innovative for that time "feuilleton-futuristic" style. Places, events, people, words, thoughts, hopes - everything seems to merge into one crazy whirlpool-kaleidoscope, whose name is war.
The author, Belarusian writer of German-Russian origin Ales Hrodna (Alexander Funk; 1899–1944), survived three arrests under Stalin and died in prison.
