What do we know about the world of ideas of the average Ukrainian of the XVIII century? What is known about the perception of contemporary political events, processes, personalities? Most of the sources known today are unable to shed light on these issues. However, there are texts that can be used to reconstruct the unique manifestations of the worldview of the "little" man of that era. These are the documents of the institutions of political investigation of the Moscow Empire and the Russian Empire. They were tasked with overseeing, prosecuting and investigating so-called political crimes - any attempts to dissent or oppose the existing system. Among the objects of such "special services" in the early XVIII century. there were "Mazepins", as well as all those who spoke disrespectfully about monarchs, the policy of the empire aimed at the destruction of the Hetmanate. Most of the statements whose authors were repressed are a living testimony of the era, a vivid manifestation of national identity.
