We pass them on the streets, at train stations, in shopping malls; in winter, they take shelter in allotments. Sometimes they smell bad or wear dirty clothes, but often they look like any of us. They are united by homelessness and a shared experience: psychological, physical, and institutional violence, broken family ties, a sense of shame, and exclusion from the job market. Sylwia Gora gave voice to women who, at some point in their lives, became invisible. She listened to dozens of stories from people across Poland who found themselves street homeless, used shelters, lived in shelters, sheltered or training apartments, and participated in assistance programs. They talk about the past that led them to these places, their difficult present, and their dreams for the future. The author addresses issues often overlooked in the homelessness debate, such as menstruation and pregnancy on the street, and spending time with children on the street.
