The book encompasses the history of representation, which gained ground during the epoch of Renaissance, which shifted the accent from the artist’s skills to his mystic ability to apprehend visions. As a result, the strengthening of an ideal aspect in culture occurred. From the author’s point of view, the attitude to representation determines the peculiarities of culture. Hence, the critics of visionarism from the position of Orthodox theology, and the poetics of icon as one of the influential mechanisms of evolution of Russian culture in the XIXth century are investigated.
