First comprehensive study of cultural attitudes and policies related to waste in modern Bulgaria. The main characters in the book are the state, the Metropolitan Municipality, the garbage collection companies of "bears, wolves and foxes", civil mobilizations, but also the socialist housewife, informal recyclers, cap collectors. In Sofia's garbage crises, mistrust in institutions, political populism and corruption, skepticism towards experts, neglecting or concealing the health hazards of the capital's residents are interwoven. Thus, waste becomes more of a cultural and social than an ecological phenomenon. Its study precisely in the tradition of cultural anthropology allows to unfold all aspects of this multi-layered phenomenon.
