The international conference "25 Years after. The Baltic Way and the Collapse of Totalitarian Communism: European Memory and Political Inspiration", August 21st and 22nd in Riga, Latvia was organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the Baltic Way, a peaceful action that took place on August 23, 1989, when two million people from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia joined hands to create a human chain spanning the three Baltic States. The non-violent struggle that was at the heart of the Baltic Way demonstrated Baltic solidarity regarding independence and also paved the way for civil resistance and liberation from communism in Eastern and Central Europe. Today the Baltic Way can be seen not just as a historical icon, but also as a source of political inspiration for captive nations, struggling against non-democratic regimes.
