The book describes one of the most remarkable phenomena of the XXth century - the so-called 'Vitebsk Renaissance'. In 1917-1922 the life of this provincial town was connected with names of Mark Shagal, Kazimir Malevich, El' Lisitskii, Nikolai Mal'ko and many other distinguished painters. The author of the work describes this unique period of artistic life combining the analysis of Vitebsk period in the creative work of artists with the reconstruction of theatrical, musical and literary life of the city during post-revolutionary years.
