Thoughts and historical songs are genres of the Ukrainian folk art. The victory of the Zaporizhzhia Cossacks, the longing of prisoners for their native land, the stormy years of Khmelnytskyi — these are the leading topics of poems. In terms of content they are very similar to historical songs, and in terms of performance, they are similar to lamentations. The authors were mostly participants of events — Cossack battles and campaigns.
